A tall stoneware jug with blue glaze pattern on the outside with some incised lines, and brown glaze inside. The vessel has an applied handle and pulled spout. The maker, Michael Casson OBE (1925-2003), became a celebrity in the world of studio pottery with his television appearances, books, and teaching. In 1976 the BBC broadcast 'The Craft of the Potter' with Michael as the front man. He made his first pots at an evening class in 1945 and trained at Hornsey School of Art. In 1952 he established a pottery in London and in 1959 moved to Prestwood, in Buckinghamshire. He spent some years teaching at Harrow School of Art. In 1977 Michael and his wife Sheila Casson, also a potter, moved to Wobage Farm in Herefordshire. Here they were able to use wood-fired kilns to make saltglaze, and expand the pottery team to include some craftspeople. Michael was interested in the culture of ancient Greece and was influenced by Minoan and Mediterranean pottery. He was known particularly for his excellent jugs, his interest in salt-glazed stoneware, and his skills as a communicator and teacher.
