Decorated and glazed 6 inch (15.5cm) tile by William de Morgan from the Fulham factory period with Sands End Pottery backstamp. William Frend De Morgan was associated with William Morris, the influential Arts and Crafts Movement designer, whom he met in 1863. De Morgan designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris and Co., but concentrated on ceramics from 1872 when he set up a pottery in Chelsea. He experimented with the chemistry of glazes (rediscovering the technique of lustre ware) and also explored methods of kiln firing and pattern making. His tile patterns reflected an interest in medieval design, and particularly Persian designs, with their palette of deep colours and stylised floral or animal motifs, creating connected schemes when several tiles are laid together. In 1882 his factory moved to Merton Abbey and in 1888 to Fulham where his technical experimentation came to fruition. However, due to changes in fashion, which made his tiles less appealing, he turned his hand to writing and became a successful novelist when he left the factory in 1907.
