Axe
Click on an image for a larger view.
Large side axe with partial handle broken inside eye. The blade is sharpened on one side only, with an offset eye placed so that one side of the axe is completely flat. The original museum card claims the axe was used for squaring round logs to make gate posts and possibly shaping spokes for wheels. After cleaning, the fire welded steel edge to the blade has become quite visible as a dark smooth band. Thinner on the tapered, sharp edge and wider on the flat surface. The steel portion has fractured at one end, possibly from being driven into a log on the point. The tougher iron backing has not fractured so the blade has only slightly bent."
