Refugee resettlement
Herefordshire is an inclusive county that has welcomed refugees for many years. Most recently, from 2016 onwards, the council has supported refugees escaping humanitarian crises, with funding from central government resettlement programmes.
In early 2020, the council made a pledge to support the resettlement of 125 refugees over a five year period (view the decision). Those supported through this pledge have been refugees from Afghanistan following the humanitarian crisis there in 2021.
We are supporting both schemes set up by government - the Afghan Citizens Resettlement scheme (ACRS) and the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP). You can find further information about the schemes in the Home Office factsheet.
There is a continued need to support Afghan refugees as well as those identified as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, originating from other countries, who are being supported through the United Kingdom Resettlement Scheme (UKRS).
To better understand how you can support refugee families, take a look at Refugee Action's What sort of help might a recently arrived refugee need (pdf).
There is often some confusion between the different terminology relating to refugees and asylum seekers. We have a short explanation on key terms.
