Three people at a job interviewEntering the job market can be both exciting and daunting, but with the right preparation, you can approach interviews with confidence. The following information offers practical tips and strategies including:

  • Mastering the art of the interview: From body language to answering common interview questions, discover techniques to help you prepare for your next interview
  • Dressing for success: Understand the importance of professional attire and how to make a positive first impression

Whether you're currently out of work or actively seeking employment, preparation is key to success. Explore our tips below to help you prepare for your next interview.

Research the company

Before your interview, take the time to research the company thoroughly. Understand its mission, values, products, services, and recent achievements. This demonstrates your genuine interest in the company and allows you to tailor your responses to align with its goals and culture.

Know the job role

Familiarise yourself with the job role and its responsibilities. Review the job description carefully to understand the skills, qualifications, and experience required. Prepare examples from your own experiences that demonstrate how you meet these requirements.

Practice common interview questions

Practice makes perfect - rehearse common interview questions with a friend, family member, one of our work coaches or in front of a mirror. Questions such as "Tell me a bit about yourself", "What do you think you can bring to the role?" and "Why would you like to work here?" are all common questions that it can be useful to practice answering ahead of the interview. Practice articulating your answers confidently and concisely. Remember to highlight your skills, experiences, and achievements relevant to the position.

Showcase your skills and achievements

Prepare specific examples of your skills, achievements, and experiences that are relevant to the role. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses and provide concrete examples of how you have contributed positively in previous roles or experiences.

Interview day

Dress appropriately

Choose appropriate clothing for your interview based on the company's dress code and industry standards. Dressing professionally shows that you take the interview seriously and respect the company and role you're applying for.

Arrive early

Plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early for your interview, allowing time for unexpected delays. Arriving early shows punctuality and gives you the opportunity to compose yourself and mentally prepare before the interview.

Bring necessary documents

Ensure you have copies of your CV, cover letter, and any other relevant documents with you. Also, bring a pen and notepad to jot down any important information during the interview.

Prepare questions

Prepare a list of insightful questions to ask the interviewer about the role, company culture, and future opportunities. This demonstrates your genuine interest in the position and allows you to gather valuable information to make an informed decision if an offer is extended.

Practice good body language

During the interview, maintaining good posture, and offering a firm handshake can show confidence. Actively listening to the interviewer demonstrates your enthusiasm and engagement.

Follow up

After the interview, you could send a thank you email to the interviewer expressing your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position. This small gesture demonstrates professionalism and leaves a positive impression.

By following these tips and investing time in thorough preparation, you can boost your confidence prior to interview and, hopefully increase your chance of securing the job you desire.
