Conor's story

Conor moved to Herefordshire in the existing Shared Lives arrangement he had been in since childhood.

As he grew in adulthood, he was supported to move into a new Shared Lives arrangement where he has grown in confidence. Within weeks of the move, he was demonstrating his ability to learn, do things for himself, make and verbalise his own choices.

His prior shyness left him, and he has become an outgoing, sociable man who likes to talk and talk on the phone.

Conor has demonstrated that he listens to and understands conversations and is able to participate. He has demonstrated his love of music, his sense of humour and his caring and loving nature.

With appropriate support, Conor has conquered his fears of attending medical appointments, including the dentist, which had not happened for many years. He has coped admirably with treatment needed.

Conor has been away for a weekend break with his carer Shelia, engaging well in a large family gathering and sleeping in an unfamiliar setting. Conor now shows interest and care for Shelia's family and looks forward to family gatherings.

Conor has become more independent in dressing and undressing, regularly achieving small goals. He chose a whole new wardrobe to suit his taste.

The High Sheriff said how, despite all Conor's inhibitions and shyness, he has overcome so many challenges and grown into a confident, helpful team member with a brilliant unique sense of humour.

Conor's Shared Lives carer

Conor's Shared lives carer said, "I am so very proud of Conor, not only for his achievements at the farm, but in life generally. When he came to my home last October, he couldn't even look at anybody and definitely wouldn't speak.

When Conor needed a long-term arrangement, I made the life changing decision to support him. This was not a decision made lightly as until then I only did respite as I liked the freedom to travel that this gave me. This turned out to be the best decision of my life.

Conor has given me so much joy, love and laughter. He is kind, gentle, loving and very sensitive. He has gone from believing he was 7 years old to proudly telling everyone he is a man of 31.

He knows he has choices and that he can say "No" to the greens he should eat, because he is an adult, and he can.

While he has already come so far, I feel this is just the start for him."
